Who we are
At Happy Destrier Equine Consulting, we help horse and farm owners create and maintain facilities that work well—for horses, people, and the land. Our focus is on bringing health, balance, and practical function to everyday barn life, from how horses move through their environment to the systems that keep things running smoothly.
Founded by Andrea Mahaffey, Happy Destrier is built on more than 30 years of hands-on experience in equine care, horsemanship, and facility management. As a lifelong horsewoman, former hunter-jumper competitor, trainer, instructor, and certified equine bodyworker, Andrea brings a well-rounded, practical perspective shaped by years of working closely with both horses and their owners.
Her interest in biomechanics, bodywork, and behavior informs a thoughtful approach to equine management—recognizing the connection between movement, comfort, and environment. This perspective carries into the design and refinement of facilities and systems, helping owners create setups that support soundness, reduce stress, and make daily herd management more straightforward and sustainable.
With over 20 years of experience living in the Colorado mountains, Andrea also understands how to design and manage properties that hold up to changing seasons, heavy snow, and demanding conditions—keeping operations safe, functional, and efficient year-round.
Happy Destrier works alongside owners, barn managers, and other professionals to assess, refine, and improve systems—creating environments where horses can move naturally, daily routines feel efficient, and long-term care supports both horse and owner.
My Philosophy
I take a holistic view of horse management, considering the whole horse rather than focusing on isolated issues. This means integrating thoughtful, forage-based nutrition, appropriate movement, mindful handling, and environments designed to support both physical soundness and mental well-being.
At the same time, I recognize that every program must also work for the owner. Balancing the horse’s needs with practical, sustainable management is key to long-term success, creating an approach that supports both horse and human in a meaningful way.
Collaboration is also central to my work. I partner closely with veterinarians, farriers, and other professionals who bring valuable expertise to the table. Together, we can align around a shared vision and create a supportive, well-managed environment where horses—and the people who care for them—can truly thrive.
